Welcome to
Year 2

Welcome to Oak- Year 2! We’re thrilled to have your child join our vibrant learning community.

Class Teacher
Miss A Perkins
A welcome from the class teacher...

Hello, I’m Miss Perkins!

I am proud to be a teacher at The Orchards Primary Academy, where I have been part of the wonderful team since 2020. My journey into education began with an Early Childhood degree, which equipped me with invaluable skills in child development, play-based learning, and fostering curiosity in young minds. Building on that foundation, I progressed to a PGCE in Primary Education, which deepened my understanding of pedagogy and prepared me to create engaging, inclusive, and inspiring learning environments. .

In Year 2, we have an exciting year ahead filled with rich learning experiences and adventures that will spark imagination and encourage every child to thrive. Our curriculum is designed not only to develop core skills in reading, writing, and mathematics but also to broaden horizons through enrichment and wider curriculum opportunities. We believe learning should be memorable and meaningful, and this year promises just that.
We’ll begin the Autumn Term with a magical visit to see Santa—a truly special experience that brings joy and wonder to the classroom. Later in the year, we’ll embark on a fascinating trip to enhance our understanding of the Great Fire of London, bringing history to life and helping children connect with the past in an engaging way. These are just a few of the highlights, and there are many more wonderful opportunities planned throughout the year, from creative arts projects to science investigations and outdoor learning experiences.
My goal is to ensure every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential. I cannot wait to watch the children grow in confidence, develop new skills, and continue succeeding in all areas of their learning. Together, we will celebrate achievements, overcome challenges, and make this year one to remember. Here’s to a year filled with curiosity, creativity, and countless moments of joy!.

Year 2 in action
Science
Year 2 Science is full of curiosity, creativity, and hands-on discovery! Children become little investigators as they learn to make predictions, test hypotheses, and explore the world around them through exciting experiments. From investigations to learning about materials and their properties and uncovering the wonder of our natural world, every lesson is an opportunity to think like a scientist. We’ll dive into topics such as “Super Scientists,” where children learn about inspiring figures and their incredible discoveries, and carry out practical activities that encourage questioning, observing, and recording results. These experiences not only build scientific knowledge but also develop problem-solving skills and a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.
Geography
Geography in Year 2 is an exciting journey of exploration and discovery! Children will learn about the seven continents and the contrasting climates of hot and cold countries, developing a global awareness that sparks curiosity. We’ll compare life in the UK with Kenya, exploring similarities and differences in culture, landscapes, and environments. Closer to home, we’ll investigate our local area of Birmingham, encouraging children to observe and appreciate the world around them. Through hands-on investigative lessons, research projects, and the use of atlases and maps, pupils will become confident geographers who ask questions, make observations, and draw conclusions. These engaging activities help children understand not only where places are but also why they matter, building a strong foundation for geographical thinking and a love for learning about our planet.
Art
Art in Year 2 is a vibrant and creative journey where children not only develop the skills to become confident artists but also discover the joy of self-expression. Through our art unit, pupils learn essential techniques such as shading, colour blending, and composition, building a strong foundation in artistic practice. Alongside these skills, children are introduced to a range of influential artists, including Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Kandinsky. Exploring their unique styles and contributions inspires our young learners to experiment with different approaches and find their own creative voice. Every lesson is designed to spark imagination and encourage children to enjoy the arts, thrive in their creativity, and celebrate the beauty of visual expression.
Enrichment Experiences
As part of one of many of our wonderful enrichment experiences, Year 2- along with the rest of Phase 1, encountered a magical trip to see Santa and his elves in his workshop. They all received a gift and a golden wishing coin and even had the chance to sit on his sleigh!
Parent Workshops
We have lots of opportunities to invite parents in to join our fantastic learning experiences!
Christmas Craft Workshop with Parents
Throughout the Year, we invite parents in as much as possible to see first-hand the awe and wonder created in our school. Parents are invited in to assemblies, workshops, crafts sessions and much more so keep a look out on our Class Dojo and social media pages for lots of exciting things ahead

Times Tables Rock Stars

We subscribe to TTRS so your children can have daily access at home and at school to this fantastic times tables resource.  There are a wide range of different game types for the children to explore whilst developing their times tables knowledge and fluency.  In the background, the site learns the areas your child might be finding more challenging and exposes them to more questions in these tables to help them improve.  We would recommend around 5-10 minutes practice per day.   If your child has forgotten their login, we can provide a copy.
